A conversation with Christoph Neimann

Continued from page 029:

cannot see myself doing something for McDonnell Douglas, or the NRA. I could not see myself doing that, although I probably have worked for clients who had half their companies’ investments in weapons companies. So I guess I am as guilty as if I worked for...

Gelman: So you’re just going to say "Sorry, I can’t... "

Christoph: Right now I have enough jobs, so I have the luxury to say no. So I guess at the moment I would say no. But how I would actually react when my existence is on the line?

Gelman: You said tobacco and alcohol is okay.

Christoph: If I had the choice, I wouldn’t. I really have to say that I think it's not so much the product that is evil and many people have died, but the tobacco companies themselves are really evil. I wouldn’t mind promoting cigarettes. It’s more their business practices that are really, really bad. That’s why I wouldn’t want to be involved with them.

Gelman: Do you really think that their methods are more evil than any other company? Be that it is a product or media? Programs for teenagers, anything like MTV, for example. Do you think they are more immoral than MTV?

Christoph: I don’t know. Weapons are probably where I draw the line no matter what.

Gelman: Like military?

Christoph: For anything. Military, or weapons trade.

Gelman: Or for the government?

Christoph: Government..

Gelman: See, It’s hard to draw the line.

Christoph: I try to be careful to say I will never, because, as you say, it’s complicated. You might find yourself... I just found myself doing a job for Microsoft. Working for Microsoft is like working for a sort of Evil Empire. Where do we draw the line? I try not to judge other people too hard; I’m really concerned about these issues. It’s not that easy to stay that way; it won’t really work out. I don’t have the illusion I’ll be able to maintain my integrity throughout my career, no matter how hard I try, but I still think I should try. It’s still important to consider these decisions. It's just that I have no illusions of making perfect decisions or changing the rules.
