Gelman: What kind of criteria you apply, not just to your own design, but when you look at other designers’ work? What do you think is important in the result and in the process?

Carol: The idea. Absolutely. Always. Always. Number one. I get seduced by beautiful graphics too, but again, that’s like a passing sort of romance, usually, but without-it’s ideas. Always. And they last. They’re so much more powerful. I mean, they have the power.
